Tabitha Teer, a Shelby County High School senior, has been awarded a Smith Scholarship, which is an all expenses paid scholarship for students to attend a four-year Alabama college.

Fifteen recipients were announced for the Smith Scholarship, which was made possible through the J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship Foundation, the largest endowment ever made for Alabama High School seniors attending a public school.

Teer, who is her class valedictorian, is described by her teachers as a sincere, compassionate and determined individual, with a positive attitude, who views each day as an opportunity.

The Smith Scholarships are targeted to students who are the first in their family to go to college and who are committed to service for their family and community. These young people must have a “C” average or above, and an indication that they can succeed in college. The Smith Scholarship Fund will pay up to $15,000. Tutoring, mentoring and enrichment programs make this scholarship program unusual and not replicated by other scholarship funds.

The J. Craig and Page T. Smith Foundation was created by Mignon C. Smith to honor her mother and father.

An awards ceremony will be held May 13 at 3 p.m. at the Birmingham Museum of Art
