Montevallo High School senior James K. “Jake” Finn has been selected by audition as one of six semifinalists worldwide for the young artist division of the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition. The competition will be held in early August at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.

“This is one of the most prestigious euphonium competitions in the world,” said Dr. Martin Cochran, assistant professor of music at the University of Montevallo and a nationally recognized euphonium player. Finn has been taking private lessons from Dr. Cochran for more than two years.

In the competition, prizes are awarded up to $1,000 in the young artist division.

Finn has also received music and academic scholarships to attend the University of Montevallo in the fall and the Robert E. Hawkins scholarship from the Rotary Club of Montevallo.

He has served as section leader for the Marching Troubadours, the MHS band, and as a member of the Montevallo High School Jazz Band. He was selected to play with the All-State Band, several Honor Bands and the University of Montevallo Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble.

Born in Denver, Colo., Finn has lived in Montevallo since he was two years old. He is the son of Gay Finn and Jim Finn, both of Montevallo
