Jorge Fernandez Valdes maintained his lead in the 61st annual U.S. Junior Amateur on Tuesday with an 8-under par before severe weather interrupted play at Shoal Creek Golf Club.

Valdes, who sank 10 birdies in Monday’s opening round to take a 7-under par lead in the tournament, teed off from the back nine to start his second round of play Tuesday afternoon. Similarly to his first nine holes on Monday, Valdes was 1-under par Tuesday when play was suspended at 2:47 p.m. The second of stroke play will resume Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Defending champion Cory Whitsett sits six strokes behind Valdes. Seth Reeves, 17, or Duluth, Ga., is three-under in second place. He completed five holes before the storms moved in on Tuesday.

Match play among the top 64 golfers will begin Wednesday morning after the conclusion of continued round of stroke play.
