Briarwood Christian senior defensive end Walker May has verbally committed to Vanderbilt University.
May committed earlier this week after weighing an offer from Vandy that he received after attending its camp in mid-June.
“I just prayed about that one and thought about it for a long time,” May said. “I feel like I fit into their defensive scheme.”
May, standing at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, shined in the 2007 Class 5A championship game with a punt block and touchdown. He collected close to 90 tackles and five sacks last season as a junior.
Briarwood head coach Fred Yancey is looking for May to be the Lions’ leader on defense and possibly the leading punt blocker this year.
“He can make a lot of tackles in a hurry. He’s relentless on every defensive play,” Yancey said. “(Vanderbilt) is going to love his speed. They’re going to love his work ethic. He’s a great football player. He’s going to be exciting for them.”
May said he also had offers from UAB, South Alabama, Arkansas State and Liberty University.
He has been told he will be played at either linebacker or defensive end, depending on his size when he arrives at Vandy.
