New sports may be in the works for the University of Montevallo.

UM president Philip C. Williams held a retreat at the 4-H Center outside Columbiana on Monday, where a new five-year strategic plan was announced.

Included in the first phase of the plan was that the athletic department will “explore the feasibility and advisability” of adding intercollegiate softball and women’s lacrosse. Athletics director Jim Herlihy said the plan also includes adding men’s crosscountry and reinstating men’s tennis, a sport UM has not had for decades.

UM will conduct an initial study to be completed by the 2010-11 academic year, followed by a second by the 2013-14 academic year.
