Before fans could grab their seats and enjoy their popcorn, the Spain Park Jaguars (1-0) took a 7-0 lead over the Homewood Patriots (0-1) in the first quarter.
Despite the mistakes that would plague Homewood all night, they managed to keep the game close in the first half.
A tight defensive battle lasted through the game until the final moments of the third quarter when Jaguar quarterback Hunter Walker found his stride. Walker hit wide receiver Josh Drum for 24 yards. A few moments later, Walker found his other wide out Daniel Watkins for another 20 yard gain and a first down to the Patriot 20. Walker would go to Watkins again for five more yards to end the third quarter. With 11:23 to go in the fourth quarter, Walker found running back Alton Daniels for a 4-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead, 14-0.
Homewood couldn’t get its offense on track all evening. Senior quarterback Josh Wooten was pulled in the second half in favor of Derrick Powell. Powell moved the team at times, but like most of the game, the Patriots’ offensive drives would stall, which proved to be the death nail for them as the Jags took advantage of Patriot mishaps.
With 8:27 left in the game, Jake Lee broke a short pass into a 75-yard dash to the goal line for another Jaguar touchdown, which sent the Homewood fans to the exits. For the second year in a row, the Jags’ defense shut down the Patriot offense to end the game as Spain Park defeated the Homewood Patriots 21-0.
