The Calera Eagles improved their season record to 2-2 with an impressive 40-22 home win over Bibb County, Friday night.

After scoring the first 13 points of the game on an 8-yard Kendal Cox run and 6-yard Brandon Wells run, the Eagles quickly found themselves on the short end of a 14-13 score.

Bibb County had answered in the second period with touchdown runs of 1 and 11-yards.

But things would not stay that way long. Facing a fourth-and-10 situation at the Choctaw 30-yard line, Brandon Wells completed a pass to Walter Smith for a 17-yard gain.

Wells later hit Trent Posey for an 8-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion failed, but the Eagles were up, 19-14, with 2:05 left in the half.

Bibb County would answer early in the third quarter with a 32-yard run to take a 22-19 lead, but it was all Calera from there.

The Eagles would regain the lead, 26-22, on an 11-yard pass play from Wells to Chris Majors with 6:34 left in the third period.

Wells would connect with Majors again for a 5-yard strike. And Tinajero would add the PAT to put the Eagles up, 33-22.

The final score would come on an 11-yard pass from Wells to Kendal Cox. The PAT was good and Eagles had the win, 40-22.

“I thought we played extremely hard,” said Calera head coach Mac Thomspon. “We fought for four quarters, and we finally put together a pretty good game.”

Thompson said quarterback Wells has made a 200 percent increase since the spring, is smart and athletic.

“He’s going to be phenomenal before he leaves here,” Thompson said.

Wells gained 103 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown on the ground. He completed 16 of 33 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Two passes went to the opposing team.

“I started off shaky,” Well said. “Being a quarterback, you’ve got to kind of forget. So I just forgot about it and came out somehow and played, I guess, a better game.”

Thompson noted some of his players playing on both sides of the ball include Erik Burrells, Cox and C.J. Cohill.

The leading ground gainer behind Wells was Cox, who rushed eight times for 62 yards.

Leading receiver Walter Smith caught seven passes for 127 yards, while Trent Posey caught two passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.

All together, the Eagles put together 442 yards of offense to 330 for Bibb County. However, the Choctaws actually out rushed Calera, 320 yards to 191.

Passing was another story with Calera gaining 251 yards to 10 for Bibb County.

Bibb County fumbled the ball away to Calera three times, while Calera coughed up the football once and recovered it.
