Spartans trample Spain Park

They couldn’t run and barely could pass. Nothing Spain Park tried, even swapping personnel in and out, worked Friday, as Mountain Brook moved one step closer toward a Class 6A, Region 6 championship with a 35-0 victory.
“If you can’t run the football in Region 6, you’re not going to win any games,” Spain Park head coach David Shores said.
Mountain Brook (4-0, 4-0) did run the ball, collecting more than 200 yards on the ground for the fourth-straight game behind quarterback Judd Golsan and tailback J.D. Marsh.
Golsan, who had more than 200 yards of offense, signaled the end of the game in the third quarter. With five yards still to go on a 37-yard touchdown run, he turned back toward the Spain Park defense and waved bye-bye almost as to say, “You can’t catch me,” and “Ball game over.”
The score put the Spartans up 28-0 and clearly out of reach.
“ Quality offenses like this you’ve got to keep off the field. If you keep giving them opportunity after opportunity they’re going to score a lot of points,” Shores said.
Mountain Brook didn’t waste any time, scoring on its first possession from six yards out on a J.D. Marsh run.
Two missed field goals later by Mountain Brook kicker Ford McGuffey, and the Jags were still in it, but John Pickering tried to stomp out what little momentum Spain Park may have thought they had with a 42-yard punt return to extend the Spartans’ lead to 14-0 before the half.
Golsan found Conner Bynon twice in the third quarter to bookend his 37-yard touchdown run to round out the night.
Spain Park (1-3, 1-3) travels around the bend to Briarwood Christian (3-1) on Friday, while Mountain Brook hosts Vestavia Hills (3-1, 3-0) for a battle for the top spot in Region 6.
