There’s a new rule of thumb in Class 4A football. If you’re undefeated, don’t play Calera.
After losing at unbeaten Jemsion in week three, Calera (3-3, 3-1) has now knocked off two previously unbeaten team — Bibb County in week four and Greensboro, 42-21, Friday.
The two teams traded touchdowns through the first half to sit knotted, 21-21, at the half, but a 21-point fourth quarter broke things wide open for the Eagles.
Erik Burrells scored on a 20 yard run in the fourth to take a 28-21 lead. Maleki Harris followed with a 10-yard interception return to give Calera a two-touchdown lead before Burrells punched it in again from 2 yards out for the final score.
Calera, who has been more of a passing team than run team this season, racked up 234 yards on the ground and threw for 107, while holding the Raiders to 181 yards of total offense. Burrells led the charge with 108 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Kendal Cox had two rushing touchdowns in the first half, while Brandon Wells found Trent Posey on a first-quarter touchdown pass.
Calera travels to Dallas County next Friday before returning home Oct. 17 for homecoming against Livingston.
