Calera strolls past Dallas County

Calera used a 19-point first quarter to down Dallas County on the road Friday, 32-6, and improve to 4-1 in Class 4A, Region 3.
Erik Burrells, Brandon Wells and Kendal Cox each scored on short runs in the first quarter, while Wells added another 1-yard run in the second to give the Eagles a 25-0 halftime lead.
That was all the scoring the offense would need, as it racked up 288 yards. The Eagle defense forced four turnovers. One of those turnovers was a fumble in the fourth quarter, which was recovered by Nick Harris and returned 45 yard for the Eagles’ final score.
Dallas County got on the board late in the game with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Brook Ross to Andrew Mahan.
Brandon Jackson led the Hornets with 56 yards on 10 carries, while Burrells had his second-straight 100-yard game with 118 yards to lead Calera. Wells was 7-of-15 passing for 71 yards.
Harris led the defense with 14 tackles and interception to go with his fumble recovery and touchdown.
The Eagles (4-3, 4-1) can lock in a playoff berth with a homecoming win Friday, when Livingston (2-5, 2-3) comes to town.
