Columbiana mayoral candidate Gregg Rushton has filed for a recount of last Tuesday’s election results.

Rushton lost by five votes to two-term incumbent Allan Lowe, 521 to 516, and said he wants to make sure the numbers are 100 percent accurate.

“When you get down to five votes, you should be able to expect an exact vote,” said Rushton.

Lowe said he wasn’t surprised by the recount, given the close vote.

“I certainly expected it,” said Lowe.

The city of Columbiana has not yet scheduled the recount, though it must take place within 72 hours of Rushton’s request.

All candidates must be given at least 24 hours notice of the recount too.
