Road to volleyball title continues

Five Shelby County area teams remain in the hunt for a trip to the AHSAA volleyball state tournament in Pelham.

Pelham and Spain Park both earned the right to host a sub-state match this week, by advancing to the final of Class 6A, Region C Saturday at Homewood High School.

Pelham (57-4) swept Spain Park in the final 25-13, 25-12 and 25-5. Whitney Billings led the way on the day with 44 kills, eight blocks, 30 digs and five aces. Lindsey Young had 92 assists and 11 aces. Whitney Hudson led defensively with 48 digs, while Jasmine Clark has 21 kills and eight blocks.

Pelham will host Shades Valley for sub-state Thursday, while Spain Park will host Bob Jones.

In Class 5A, Briarwood downed John Carroll in the Region B final to advance to Thursday’s sub-state round.

The Lions will host Spanish Fort Thursday, while Shelby County will travel to the defending state champions, St. Paul’s.

In Class 3A, Montevallo finished third in the region and will travel to Cottage Hill Christian for sub-state. Montevallo opened the day with a win over Cordova, 25-9, 25-16 and 25-15.

Calera, Indian Springs and Thompson were eliminated in the first round of Saturday’s regionals.
