Mayor Allan Lowe won his third term when he came out ahead by five votes in a recount of election ballots at city hall Tuesday.

Lowe defeated opponent Gregg Rushton, 521-516.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Lowe said immediately after the recount. “I’m glad the numbers are right.”

Lowe said he plans to reach out to Rushton’s supporters in an effort to move the city forward.

Rushton said he’s satisfied with the recount and has no further plans to challenge the election.

“Everyone wants to have confidence the votes are counted exactly, and it was exactly the same,” Rushton said. “I think everybody should be comfortable with that.”

Rushton added the result is telling of the community’s mindset.

“The close race shows the town is undecided about what the future should be,” Rushton said.
