Lady Dawgs ends Briarwood’s streak

The Montevallo Lady Bulldogs wrapped up the Pell City Tournament with a large upset over previously unbeaten Briarwood Christian, 62-54, Wednesday.
Alisha Gentry shot 52 percent from the field en route to 28 points to lead Montevallo, while defensively shutting down Briarwood’s 3-point record holder Lauren Parks, who had zero points in the game.
The Dawgs led by 13 with over a minute to play, but missed free throws allowed the Lions to pull within five before Montevallo pulled off the eight-point win.
Amber Cardwell followed Gentry’s lead with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Shanise Hudson had 10. Seqouia Peeples had 10 rebounds.
Becca Stephens led Briarwood with 16 points, followed by nine from Amy Hale.
The Lions, ranked sixth in Class 5A, was 6-0 to start the season before the loss.
