More than 70 coaches have applied for the Oak Mountain head football coach position, according to principal Joan Doyle.

Doyle said Wednesday that she has received applications from current high school head coaches, high school assistant coaches and college assistant coaches. Some resumes have come in from Texas, Mississippi and Georgia in addition to in-state applications.

Five-year head coach Jerry Hood resigned as Oak Mountain’s head coach after the final game of the season in early November. Hood, who also serves as athletic director, has expressed interest in remaining on as AD, and Doyle said that is still an option.

The position was posted on the Shelby County Board of Education Web site for two weeks until Tuesday, but Doyle said the position would remain posted on the state site until Jan. 5. She will begin reviewing resumes Jan. 6.

Doyle would not comment on if any current coaches in Shelby County or Oak Mountain assistants were among the first 70 applicants.
