Shelby County ties to bowl season

A number of players from Shelby County participated in college football bowl games this holiday season. Here is a break down of those who saw playing time in a bowl game.
Jan. 8 – BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – Spain Park’s William Green (Right) will line up on special teams for the University of Florida against Oklahoma.
Jan. 1 – GATOR BOWL – Pelham native Dabo Swinney coached his first bowl game as a head coach, leading Clemson University in a 31-27 loss to Nebraska. Former Spain Park player Tyler Grisham started as a captain at receiver and had a catch for 6 yards.
Dec. 31 – MUSIC CITY BOWL — Oak Mountain linebacker Chris Johnson had one solo tackle and one assisted tackle for Vanderbilt in the Comodores’ 16-14 victory over No. 24 Boston College.
Dec. 21 – NEW ORLEANS BOWL – Shelby County’s Andrew Burns played at defensive end in Southern Mississippi’s 30-27 victory over Troy. Pelham wide receiver Andrew Davis caught a 10-yard pass in the first quarter to help set up Troy’s first touchdown. Thompson’s Tyler Clark started at left guard for Troy.
Dec. 20 – ST. PETERSBURG BOWL — Memphis tighet end Deven Onarhelm,
a Thompson grad, started at tight end in the Tigers’ 41-14 loss to South Florida.
