Hoover edges Spain Park

It took overtime and a last-second 3-point basket, but Hoover (11-6, 2-1) edged rival Spain Park (8-12, 1-3), 54-53, to win the first Class 6A, Area 10 game of the semester Wednesday.

Senior guard Keon Blackledge hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bucs their first win over Spain Park since 2006. He finished with 22 points and five 3-pointers. Zac Richards had 10 for Hoover.

Arthur Strauss led the Jags with 18 points and was perfect on his five 3-point attempts.

In other boys’ basketball:

-OAK MTN. 66, PELHAM 34: Ronnie Mack scored 26 to pace Oak Mountain in its Class 6A, Area 10 victory over Pelham. Cary Baxter chipped in with 14 points. Austin Pierce led Pelham with 14 points.

Jan. 6

-SHELBY CO. 74, CHELSEA 64: Shelby County and Chelsea battled neck-and-neck most of the game until pulling away in the fourth quarter. Hakeem Lilly led the Wildcats with 21 points, including eight in the final quarter. Maurice Lovejoy led Chelsea with 18 points.

-BRIARWOOD 52, JOHN CARROLL 35: Carter Tanner continued to lead the Briarwood Lions with 26 points and five steals, as the Lions took the lead in Class 5A, Area 8.

In girls’ basketball:

-HOOVER 70, SPAIN PARK 22: Hoover dominated rival Spain Park with a 25-5 first quarter and never looked back. Meghan Dunn led the Bucs with 15 points, while Shannon Steinert had 13 points. Colby Ryan led Spain Park (4-10, 1-2) with nine points.

-PELHAM 46, OAK MTN. 29: Oak Mountain’s 10-5 lead in the first quarter was quickly erased, as Pelham outscored the Eagles 32-12 in the next two quarters. Melanie Shot led Pelham with 15 points, while Kirsten Tuggle had six points to lead Oak Mountain.

Jan. 6

-SHADES MTN. 42, CALERA 20: Keyunna Davis led Calera with nine points, but received little help, as Shades Mountain improved to 9-7.

-MONTEVALLO 81, MARBURY 28: Alisha Gentry’s 23 points helped Montevallo improve to 3-0 in Class 3A, Area 6 and 15-1 overall. Amber Cardwell contributed 12 points, while Desiree Jones and Seqouia Peeples had 12 each.
