Boys basketball recap: Thompson clinches area

Thompson secured its third-straight are title Tuesday with a 69-41 win over Pelham. The Warriors clinched the Class 6A, Area 10 regular season with the help of 17 points from Siddeeq Cooper, who was the only one to score in double-figures. Ten other Warriors (12-9, 7-1) found the basket in the game. Austin Pierce led Pelham (3-20, 0-7) with 13 points.
In other boys’ games:
– OAK MTN. 59, HOOVER 52: Oak Mountain took second place in Class 6A, Area 10 with a strong first half against Hoover, 29-13. The Eagles maintained the lead in the second half to enter the area tournament as the No. 2 seed, making Hoover the No. 3 seed. Ronnie Mack led Oak Mountain with 12 points in the first half and a pair of key free throws in the final seconds.
-SPAIN PARK 58, 42 Spain Park took a 24-10 lead into halftime and went on to beat Hewitt-Trussville with the help of a 21-point fourth quarter. Reid Cunningham scored 11 points to lead Spain Park, while Arthur Strauss and Kyle Adams each had 10.
-SHELBY CO. 62, CHELSEA 47: Hakeem Lilly posted a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds, to lead Shelby County at Chelsea. Tae Lewis also had 18 for Shelby County, while Chelsea’s Luke Moore had 16.
-BRIARWOOD 39, JOHN CARROLL 36 (OT): Johnny Balik hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to lift Briarwood past John Carroll in overtime. He finished with 13 points. Briarwood led 22-16 at halftime, but John Carroll tied the game, 36-36, with a 12-4 run in the fourth quarter. Michael Robertson followed Balik with 11 points for the Lions.
-CALERA 102, JEMISON 40: Calera bounced back from its overtime loss to Bibb County on Saturday with a lopsided win at Jemison. After leading by 26 in the first quarter, 36-10, and 39 points at halftime, 59-10, Calera levied a 62-point area victory. DeMarcus Dowdell led the Eagles with 21 points, while Codi Walker had 19 and Deondre Haynes had 14 points.
-TRINITY 71, MONTEVALLO 47: Trinity improved to 3-3 in Class 3A, Area 5, as it handed Montevallo another loss on the season. Three Trinity players scored in double figures, while Brandon Lilly led Montevallo with 13.
-CORNERSTONE 71, BESSEMER ACAD. 37: JV McKinney scored 33 points to lead Cornerstone, followed by Kendall Moore with 14 and Stephen Bulger with 11.
-EAST MEMORIAL 50, SHELBY ACAD. 37: Shelby Academy struggled from the free throw line on the road, hitting only 7-of-20. Sean Gilbert led the Raiders with 11 points and Jason McDaniel had 10. Both fouled out with about five minutes left to play in the game.
-HOPE 56, FIRST ASSEMBLY 34: Hope improved to 8-6, 7-1 in the conference with the help of 10 points from leading scorer Michael Johnston.
