Oak Mountain High School swept through the Shelby County Wrestling Duals on Monday at Thompson Middle with ease.

Defending state runner-ups Tanner Moon, Davis Bagwell and John Blakely led the way for the Eagles with undefeated records on the day, including a number of forfeits from the other team.

“It was mostly for the young guys to see how they did,” Oak Mountain head coach Steve Burrough said. “I know what I have in my top guys. The younger guys wrestled better today.”

Most of the younger Eagles come in weight classes below 145 pounds. Above 145, Bagwell and Blakely were joined with 4-0 records from Jared Woodall, Chris Stubbings and Whit Whifield. Justin Woodall (3-0) and Adam Beaton (2-0) also went undefeated in the duals. While Moon was the only one under 145 to go unbeaten on the day, Jimmy Witt and Evan Webb posted a 3-1 record, while Andrew Davidson and John Bedgood both had two wins.

The Eagles (26-3) will host Mountain Brook on Wednesday and Clay-Chalkville on Thursday as they prepare for the Jan. 31 sectionals in Trussville.

“We should finish first or second in sectionals,” Burrough said. “I’m hoping I get 10 or 11 to qualify. It’s going to be tough to qualify all 13 (like last year) because of the freshman. We’re a better team this year. By far, the quality is better this year.”

Also wrestling in the Duals was Thompson High, Pelham High, Spain Park and Shelby County.
