Four teams top first soccer poll

Four Shelby County teams sit at No. 1 in the first Alabama High School Soccer Coaches’ Poll released Feb. 6. Defending boys’ state champions Oak Mountain and Indian Springs top the Class 6A and 1A-4A polls, respectively, while Spain Park and Briarwood top the Class 6A and 5A girls’ polls, respectively.
Oak Mountain opened the season Tuesday night with a 5-0 victory at Briarwood, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A. Seniors Chandler Hoffman and Mason Lavallett each scored two goals in the win, while Andres Aristizabal had one. Oak Mountain goalkeeper Trey Anderson faced four shots on goal.
Also ranked in the Class 6A boys poll are the Spain Park Jaguars at No. 3, who reached the state semifinals last year, falling to Oak Mountain. Pelham is receiving votes just one spot out of the Top 10. Chelsea joins Briarwood in the Class 5A Top 1- at No. 6.
In the girls’ poll, Oak Mountain received two first-place votes and begins the year at No. 4 in Class 6A, while Thompson is one spot out of the Top 10 receiving votes. The Chelsea girls are No. 8 in Class 5A and Class 1A-4A state runner-up Indian Springs begins the season at No. 2 behind Guntersville.
