Both the University of Montevallo men’s and women’s basketball teams made the Gulf South Conference basketball tournament this season as No. 5 seeds from the East. However, their stay in Southaven, Miss., was short lived, as both lost by double-digits Wednesday.

The Falcon men, who won three of the last five GSC championships, fell to the University of Arkansas-Monticello, 76-63. The women lost to Ouachita Baptist University, 62-52.

The women started the tournament at 12:30 p.m. and kept Ouachita Baptist close through the first 12 minutes. However, the Tigers posted an 8-0 run to build a 27-17 lead and led 32-25 at the half.

The Falcons rallied to pull within a point, 43-42, with 9:59 to play on a lay up from Carrie Parrott. OBU’s A’Laeshia Adams hit two 3-pointers over the next three minutes to push the lead back up to seven. The Tigers were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final three minutes to secure their lead.

Adams finished with four 3-pointers and 18 points, while Gaby Coleman also had 18 points.

Parrott led UM with 14 points, while Shan Jones had 13 and Katie Vanderhyden had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

UM finishes the season 8-20.

The Falcon men followed a similar fate later in the afternoon, leading for a total of three minutes on two different occasions in the first half.

Arkansas-Monticello led by double-figures most of the second half to beat Montevallo (15-16) for the third time this season.

Nate Flowers led Montevallo with 16 points, followed by 14 from Terrill Humphrey and 12 from Andre McMillan. Bernard Seymour led Monticello with 22 points, followed by Deron Brown’s 18 points and Derek Easter’s 16 points.
