AYWA places 15 in state finals

Fifteen Alabaster Youth Wrestling Association wrestlers made it to the state finals and 10 others placed during the recent USA State Championship.

In the Middle School division, the AYWA finished in fifth place. The Bantam wrestlers battled to a third-place finish, while the Novice class powered their way to a second-place finish.

The Midget team dominated the field, winning the state championship. Overall, the AYWA team finished second out of 39 teams.

Those individuals who placed were:

Bantam

Blaise Albarado, state runner-up; Cody Robertson, state runner-up; Hamilton Gardner, third place; and Breydon Edmondson, state champion.

Midget

Chandler Akins, state champion; Jack Bratina, third place; Sam Latona, state champion; Brantley Ledbetter, state runner-up; Jack Hammond, state champion; Ken Robertson, state champion; and Noah Machan, state champion.

Novice

Gunner Ellis, state runner-up; Dominic Latona, state runner-up; Jacob Megois, state runner-up; John Ross Mayhall, third place; Dakota Collins, third place; Joshua Williams, third place; Brett Whitley, third place; Jeran McCarthy, state champion; and McNeill Gardner, fourth place.

Middle School

Clay Young, fourth place; Brewer Gilliland, state runner-up; Jacob Mayhall, fourth place; Jacob Darty, third place; and Christopher Verbitski, state runner-up.
