An Alabaster man has pled guilty Thursday for failing to register as a sex offender.

Kevin Mark Sivley, 32, was previously convicted for possession of child pornography and receipt of child pornography, requiring that he register as a sex offender.

Under federal law, states are required to maintain a database of sex offenders and each offender must register and regularly update their information. Offenders must register in the state they reside, are employed or are a student, according to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

“SORNA is important legislation designed to help educate citizens of the whereabouts of sex offenders so its enforcement is viewed as critical. Those failing to register, or keep their registration information updated, will be prosecuted,” said U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin.

Sivley faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

This case was investigated by the United States Probation Office, United States Marshals Service, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Fortune is prosecuting this case on behalf of the United States.
