Montevallo baseball never had success in Florence, until the University of Montevallo pulled off a doubleheader upset of No. 13 University of North Alabama Saturday.

UM entered Florence with a 3-15 record at UNA since the Falcons joined the NCAA in 1996. Desperately in need of a Gulf South Conference East Division series victory, UM (21-15-1, 3-6) blasted six home runs that accounted for eight runs, as it downed North Alabama, 9-6 and 6-4.

The Falcons added three more homes Sunday, but their attempt to sweep UNA in the three-game series came up short, falling 12-6.

Ryan Norman led UM through the weekend with six hits, four RBIs and a pair of home runs on Sunday, while Kevin Garcia also had six hits, drove in two and hit a home run. Andy Revell knocked in four runs off five hits. Dustin Rhodes had four RBIs.

Caleb McLeod (2-3) and John Michael Caraway (5-1) were the winning pitchers Saturday, while Brandon Aldridge (2-4) took the loss Sunday. Justin Aaron and Heath Tapscott picked up their first saves of the season Saturday.

Montevallo’s wins Saturday ended a five-game skid, which included its first loss to Stillman in 15 games, 11-2, Thursday.

UM will take the week off before hosting the University of Alabama-Huntsville for a double header Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Falcons will then take on the Birmingham Barons in an exhibition game April 6 at Regions Park in Hoover, beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by hosting No. 21 Columbus State on April 7 at 3 p.m.
