Four men were injured Thursday while working a building at the Sheriff’s Training Center in Columbiana.

A county employee and three inmates from the Shelby County Jail were hurt after a wall frame fell on them, said Sheriff Chris Curry.

All of the workers were treated at the scene and taken to local hospitals for further observation. None of the injuries were life threatening, said Columbiana Fire Chief Johnny Howard Jr.

“A couple of them were complaining about back pain,” said Howard. “They were transported for precautionary purposes.”

One of the workers was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The other men were taken by ambulance to UAB or Shelby Baptist Medical Center.

The men were setting up the frame when high winds pushed it back on them around 12:05 p.m., Curry said.

The man airlifted was caught underneath the wall frame, Howard said.

“Due to the type of injury and the way he got injured, they flew him in,” Howard said.

Sheriff’s deputies, Southeast Shelby Rescue and Columbiana Fire and Rescue all responded to the scene.

The workers were building a room that will be used for different kinds of ammunition training and simulation.
