Dishman wins county golf tourney

Pick any two of Jake Dishman’s six birdies Tuesday and that’s the difference in his two-stroke victory to win the Shelby County Golf Tournament at Ballantrae.

The Pelham senior golfer has shot as low as 64 on his home course, but posted his high school career low with a 70 to beat teammate Taylor Freeman and Oak Mountain’s Clay Nolen.

“It feels great. I haven’t been playing too well in tournaments lately, but this is my home course and I know it well. I came out knowing I was going to do well,” Dishman said.

Dishman and Freeman’s scores were the lowest a Pelham golfer has shot individually this season, as they helped lift the Panthers to the county championship with a 304 team score, seven strokes better than two-time defending county champ Briarwood Christian’s 311.

“They’re leaders of the team and have been all year. They stepped up today,” Pelham coach Joel Floyd said. “I was very pleased that with wet conditions and windy weather we were able to go out and shoot the best team round we’ve had for the year, and the best individual rounds.”

Before Dishman’s score went up on the board it looked like there would be a shootout between Freeman and Nolen to follow on the 10th hole. However, Dishman’s score and a double bogey by Nolen on his last hole, marked the winner without a playoff.

Nolen, a freshman, shot a 35 on the first nine holes, one of the best front nine scores of the day, and entered his final hole two under par. Two holes away, Dishman had just moved to -2 after sinking a birdie putt on No. 1. However, Nolen hit his worst hole of the day on his final hole, finishing seven strokes better than his only other time to play at Ballantrae. Dishman pared his final hole on No. 2 for the win.

“For the second time you’ve played this course, that’s a stout score,” Dishman told Nolen. “Trust me, with the conditions today, I got really lucky with a lot of my shots. You played good.”

Dishman and Nolen will face each other again April 22 in a match between Pelham, Oak Mountain and Mountain Brook at Ballantrae. They will also see each other in the Class 6A, Section 3 tournament at O’Colony Golf Club in Tuscaloosa April 28.
