A Celebration of life Dinner

Published 12:00 pm Saturday, April 18, 2009

The Columbiana Relay for Life Survivor Dinner, sponsored by the Novella Club of Columbiana, is a night of celebration of life to cancer survivors and their guests. This annual event has become a tradition for those who have been stricken by this terrible disease.

Chair Peggy Wood knows cancer well. She watched her father succumb to this disease and has been a cheerleader for those who continue to struggle with it, and those who have battled the Big C and won. Wood inspired the Novella Club more than 10 years ago to have a BBQ before the Relay for Life run at Elvin Hill. The event has grown to have its own special night and speaker.

This year the dinner will be at The First Baptist Church of Columbiana on April 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Wood will be assisted by her fellow federated club women: Paula Wilder, chair of set up and decorations; Stacy Walkup, welcome chair; Susan Stivers, food chair; Jo Ann Holcombe, cleanup chair; Rhonda Carter, goody bags chair; and Lisa Sallas, door prizes chair.

The American Cancer Society provides a list of cancer survivors to invite. But this year, the Novellas want to extend an open invitation to any other cancer survivors, as well as family and friends with whom they would like to share this free, delicious dinner.

The speaker for the Survivor Dinner is the County Manager Alex Dudchock, who will be speaking about exciting Shelby County capital projects.

The Novellas invite all cancer survivors and their guests to come to this special night. Just call Peggy Wood at 669-9073 to give her your name, your guests and addresses for you to attend enjoy a home-cooked meal at no charge. It is their desire to have a full house.
