The Calera High School Parent-Teacher Organization will host its first ever Calera Eagle 5K Fun Run/Walk to benefit the school’s scholarship fund April 25 at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration is $20; $25 on the day of the race. Registration forms are available at the school. Online registration, which includes a $3 processing fee, is available at active.com. All ages are welcome to participate.

“We’re hoping to highlight the city of Calera, provide our students and community with a healthy and fun activity, and raise money for the PTO scholarship fund all in one event,” said Assistant Principal Joel Dixon, race director.

The 5K course begins at the school at 100 Calera Eagle Drive, and winds through a residential section. Participants will later pass by the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum and downtown before turning onto Highway 25 and finally back to the school. Dixon said the course is “bone-flat,” and avid runners will have the opportunity to set a new personal record.

In addition to the 5K race, a one-mile fun run will begin 10 a.m. PTO member Tami Watts said participants will be cheered to the finish line by familiar faces.

“We have several groups of student cheering sections along the course to encourage runners,” Watts said, “and Calera Eagle Drive is huge and provides plenty of room for family and loved ones to support their runners.”

Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ will provide cheese biscuits, brownies and sweet tea after the race. Sav Mor Food Outlet will also provide snacks.

Awards will be given to male and female winners in the following age divisions: 1-12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and Masters.

“We’ll have gift certificates to local restaurants and other businesses for winners, and the overall winner will receive a year’s membership to Fitness Forever in Calera for free,” Dixon said. “We’ll also have some random drawings for prizes as well.”
