A bill that would allow homeschool children a chance to try out for public school athletic teams and bands was voted down in the Alabama Senate Education Committee Wednesday.

According to the Web site in favor of the bill, the decision was 6-5 against the legislation. Bill sponsor Sen. Hank Erwin, R-Montevallo, said last week that he expected the vote to be mostly partisan. It was.

Four of the supporting votes came from Republicans, while all six dissenting votes were from Democrats. The only Democrat to vote in favor of the bill making it out of committee was Sen. Bobby Denton of Colbert and Lauderdale County. Joining Erwin and Denton in favor of the bill were Sen. Rusty Glover of Mobile County, Sen. Tripp Pittman of Baldwin County and Sen. J.T. “Jabo” Waggoner of Jefferson and Shelby Counties.

Voting against the bill were senators Vivian Figures, Kim Benefield, Quinton Ross, Zeb Little, Myron Penn and Henry “Hank” Sanders.
