The Montevallo City Council Monday tabled an ordinance permitting the use of golf carts on public streets.
“We deferred it for more information, but we didn’t turn it down,” said Mayor Ben McCrory, adding the ordinance may be voted upon at the June 22 council meeting.
If the ordinance is approved, carts would be permitted on city thoroughfares except Alabama State Highways 119 and 26.
A copy of the ordinance is available on the city’s Web site, cityofmontevallo.com. Under the ordinance, any person who operates a cart must be at least 16 or older, and take responsibility for all liabilities associated with the cart. In addition, all carts must have a valid permit sticker from the Montevallo Police Department, and drivers must complete a registration form. Permit stickers must be renewed annually at a fee of $20.
Residents are encouraged to mail comments about the ordinance to City Clerk Herman Lehman, 545 Main St., Montevallo, Ala. 35115.
