For nine holes Thursday, former Spain Park golfer Trey Del Greco looked to be one of the top golfers at the 93rd Men’s State Amateur Championship at Greystone, but a rough back nine pushed Del Greco to three over par and No. 25 overall.

Del Greco, now of Vanderbilt University, entered the tournament coming off a qualifier for the U.S. Open, where he finished three strokes shy of making the cut. He started the first round of Thursday’s State Am with a -2 front nine, even with leader Daniel Glidewell of Opelika. A double bogey on No. 11 pushed Del Greco back to par. While he recovered with a birdie on 13, he doubled again on 14 and bogeyed 16 and 18 to finish three over.

Five golfers from the Greater Shelby County area are within four strokes of Glidewell. One of those is Briarwood Christian golfer Matthew Belling, who shot two over Thursday to sit tied at No. 19.

One golfer new to the scene in Alabama is Calera’s new football head coach Scott Martin, who sits tied at No. 40 overall, four over par.

“(Golf) has kind of been a passion of mine. When I’m not doing football, it’s nice to get out on the golf course and away form the job every now and then,” Martin said. “These guys play golf at a different level. I’m a guy that’s not quite as long as they are, so I’m going to have to rely on chipping and putting more than they do.”

Martin shot an even par on his first five holes Thursday, teeing off from No. 10. He struggled with a bogey on two par fives and a par 4, No. 16. A pair of birdies on the front nine canceled out two more bogeys. Tied with Martin is Morgan Driskell of Maylene.

The Championship will continue with an 18 hole round Friday. After Friday’s round, the field of 156 golfers will be reduced to the low 66 scores of the first 36 holes of golf. The final 36 holes will be played with 18 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday.
