Hamrick rallies to win State Amateur title

University of Alabama golfer Hunter Hamrick shot five-under par Sunday to win the 93rd annual Alabama State Amateur Championship.

Hamrick, who shot a five-under, 67, Friday, dropped to second place Saturday behind Kaylor Timmons and Blake West.

After a four-hour rain delay Sunday, Hamrick played near perfect to take the lead in the front nine at Greystone’s Founders Course.

“I was chasing all day. I was behind and just trying to chase (West) down,” Hamrick said. “Once I got up, I just relaxed.”

Hamrick birdied holes two and three to pull even with Timmons and then passed West with birdies on six and eight.

“We were behind the eight ball quick,” said Timmons, who passed West on the back nine.

Hamrick’s one mistake came on 15, as his tee shot went into the lake. The bogey was his first since shooting three-over on No. 14 Saturday – the hole that pushed him from leader to third place. He said he’s yet to learn how to win while playing with the lead entering the final round.

“I’ve learned how to come from behind and win. Winning, you have to learn it,” said Hamrick, who came from behind to win the Northeast Regional last month. “Each time seems easier for me.”

West shot five-over-par Sunday after shooting a 69 Saturday. He finished with a four-day score of 288. Timmons, who shot one-over Sunday, shot 287 for the tournament, five strokes behind Hamrick’s 282.

“I thought if I could shoot two-under (Sunday) that I’d have a chance,” Timmons said. “If I could have gotten it going earlier and put a little pressure on (Hamrick) maybe he might not have been as low under par as he was.”

Hamrick will play next in the Southeast Amateur June 18-21 in Columbus, Ga.
