Continuing the process of building a new fire station, Chelsea officials have selected low bidder Clements-Dean Building Co. to construct the building.

The City Council will vote on the $1.2 million bid at their next meeting July 7, said Mayor Earl Niven.

Assuming the council approves the bid, “we will approve the acceptance of the bid and finalize the financing in July and break ground sometime in August,” Niven said.

Niven said he and other city officials will recommend the Wilsonville-based company for its record of previously built projects and because their plan meets all requirements for the 11,400 square foot station.

In January, the City Council chose Chelsea-based Wanninger & Associates to design the new fire station.

The station will be built next to the old station on U.S. 280 behind the post office, Niven said.

The present two-bay fire station was built in the early 1970s and houses four firefighters in a mobile home. The proposed station doubles that with four bays and living quarters to house eight firefighters.

“We’re running out of space in order to provide the service that we need for our people,” Niven said.
