The odds of a team with a team winning a championship with a 30 percent win-loss record are rare, but that’s exactly what the Stealers baseball team based out of Oak Mountain did on Fathers’ Day, June 21.
After going 0-2-1 in pool play, the Stealers (15-35) worked their way into the championship game of the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) 12-under Alabama State Tournament in Cullman. They rallied back from 1-0 deficit in the first inning to tie the game, 1-1 and eventual enter the sixth and final inning with a 4-4 tie.
Austin Tibbett collected the bases-loaded, bloop single to drive in Graham Hackbarth for the win.
From there, “pandemonium” ensued, according to assistant coach Jeff Tapia.
“To us it was like winning a World Series. It was awesome,” he said.
The win comes after a long season for the Stealers, who suffered an 11 game losing streak in April.
