Local band Perkins & Co. will bring their unique sound to Friday’s Music on Main in downtown Columbiana.

“We play a wide variety of music,” said lead singer Maxine Perkins. “We say we specialize in music for everyone.”

The band will play songs by the Temptations, Carrie Underwood, Lionel Ritchie and Bette Midler, among others.

The group is made up entirely of Perkinses – Maxine as lead vocal, Theolphus on lead guitar, Cecelia on keyboard, Justin on drums and, this week, Ariel and Alysia as backup singers.

The first time they played together was unplanned, as they were basically thrown together on stage at a family wedding. Everyone loved their sound, asking when they would be playing again, and the band was born.

Since then, Perkins & Co. has played at graduation parties, birthday parties and church events across the Southeast.

They don’t perform at bars or nightclubs because as a core group, they sing a lot of Christian music, Maxine said. To book the group for an event, e-mail Maxine at mperkins46@netscape.com.

This is the band’s first time to perform at Music on Main, and they will begin at 7 p.m. Main Street will be blocked off, allowing attendees to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the performance.

“We’re praying that there will be a lot of people and that the crowd will be as diverse as our music,” Maxine said.
