An 18-wheeler left the road and struck a track loader Tuesday night, causing a huge explosion that sent the driver of the 18-wheeler to the hospital.

Pelham Fire Department Battalion Chief Daniel Endress said the cab on the truck separated from the bed, and bystanders had to help free the driver from the cab.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital. His condition is unknown.

The accident happened at approximately 9:53 p.m. between exits 242 and 246.
