Two men have been arrested in connection with an early morning burglary Thursday at the Cozy Corner convenience store on U.S. 31 in Calera.
Wayne Joseph Sapp, 46, of Bessemer and Bobby Dewayne McCraw, 36, of Jemison are each charged first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree burglary and second-degree theft of property, according to a news release.
Calera officers were dispatched to the store at 1:45 a.m. Thursday after receiving an alarm call, and discovered large holes in the store’s back walls.
McCraw was arrested while attempting to flee the scene. Sapp escaped.
Officers established a perimeter around the store, and called the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office to supply a tracking dog. Sapp was arrested several hundred yards behind the store in a wooded area.
Two cash registers, burglary tools and other stolen items were later located in a trash can. The items will be returned to the store’s owner.
The Jemison Police Department also assisted in the incident.
