Spain Park defeats Homewood in season opener

It didn’t take long for Spain Park running back DaRon Smith to add to his highlight film in 2009.
Smith opened the Jaguars’ season with a 95-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff as Spain Park rolled to a 21-14 win over Homewood.
The Jags led 14-0 at halftime behind Smith’s touchdown and a Graham Craig touchdown pass to receiver Daniel Watkins. Spain Park head coach David Shores said the Jags could have had a bigger lead, but mental errors in the second half allowed Homewood to get back in the game.
Watkins added another touchdown reception from Craig before the Patriots rallied with two touchdowns to cut the lead to seven points. Shores said the Jags (1-0, 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 6) ran the clock out to end the game.
“We started real good,” Shores said. “We were very sharp and had few errors. We were on the verge of blowing it open. We had a couple of crucial situations that cost us in the second half.”
Spain Park travels to Pelham next Friday for its second consecutive Class 6A, Region 6 game.
