Students attend state youth conference

Students from Thompson High School and Oak Mountain High School represented the Shelby County School District at the Sixth Annual Statewide Youth Council Conference, held Sept. 15 at Hewitt-Trussville High School.

The conference was sponsored by the Alabama Department of Education, Alabama Department of Public Health, and Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the FOCUS Program, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, and Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

The conference provided the tools and training for youth leaders to help educate their peers on the importance of reducing risky behavior that leads to teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and emotional consequences.

Thompson High School students who attended the event included Mary Afton Day, Asia Anchrum, Jesse Davis, and John Wooley.

Oak Mountain High School students were Katie Spink, Will Gorman, Drew Maddox, and MyKayla Johnson.
