Montevallo falls to LaFayette in region game

Despite another solid performance by quarterback Kevin Callender, the Montevallo Bulldogs fell to LaFayette 20-17 in a Class 3A, Region 3 contest Friday night.

Callender completed 9-of-20 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Callender also rushed for 52 yards on nine carries.

After LaFayette took an early 8-0 lead, Chad Miller scored on a 7-yard touchdown run and Brett Grey added the extra point to cut the lead to 8-7 with 8:42 remaining in the first quarter. Callender threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lilly just over three minutes later and Grey added the extra point to give Montevallo a 14-8 lead.

LaFayette scored just before halftime to tie the game at 14-all at the break. Grey kicked a 29-yard field goal with 10:18 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead before LaFayette scored the game-winning touchdown with 7:58 remaining.

Miller rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries as Montevallo racked up 315 yards in total offense. Drew Harris rushed for 42 yards. Brandon Lilly caught seven passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
