A U.S. District Court grand jury Sept. 30 indicted a Calera man on a charge related to a June 9 armed robbery of a North Shelby bank.

A federal grand jury in Birmingham indicted 67-year-old Vernon Lacy Riley Jr. on one charge of robbery after they determined the suspect may have been involved in the June robbery of the Bryant Bank at 5319 U.S. 280. The robbery occurred at about 1:15 p.m.

“Bank robberies affect all of the citizens in the Northern District, and receive high priority in this office,” said U.S. attorney Joyce White Vance. “It is imperative that we do our best to protect banks and other public institutions that people must rely on.”

If convicted, Riley could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

As of Oct. 5, no court date had been set for Riley. The robbery was investigated by the Hoover Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
