Briarwood Christian wins region volleyball tournament

Julia Hoke recorded a team-high 13 kills as Briarwood Christian School defeated John Carroll Catholic High School 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 in the championship game of a Class 5A regional tournament Oct. 17 at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery.
Briarwood defeated Shelby County 25-23, 25-12, 25-13 in the quarterfinals. The Lions downed Carver-Montgomery 25-16, 20-25, 25-10, 25-17 in the semifinals.
Briarwood will now host Monroe County in the sub-state round of the Class 5A playoffs Oct. 22.
Elizabeth Reiser finished with nine kills and Hannah Waid had a team-high 15 assists as the Lions defeated John Carroll in the championship game.
Kate Carter led the Lions with 12 kills and six aces in the semifinal win over Carver-Montgomery. Reiser had 10 kills and Waid finished with 21 assists in the win.
Reiser recorded 10 kills and Carter finished with 11 service aces in Briarwood’s win over Shelby County. Susanna McKinney had 12 assists in the win.
Oak Mountain finished runner-up at a Class 6A regional tournament at Tuscaloosa County High School and will now host Oxford in a Class 6A sub-state match Oct. 22. Pelham finished third in the same regional tournament and will travel to Grissom for a sub-state match. Thompson ended its season with a loss to Homewood in the quarterfinal round of the Class 6A regional tournament at Tuscaloosa County.
Oak Mountain defeated Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and Pelham before falling to Homewood in the championship game at Tuscaloosa County.
Samantha Skinner led Oak Mountain with 10 kills in the championship game. Chelsea Payne finished with 30 assists.
Pelham defeated Mountain Brook before falling to Oak Mountain in the semifinals. The Panthers defeated Hoover 25-13, 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 15-8 in the consolation match.
Ally Slaughter led the Panthers (42-4) with 10 kills and four aces in the consolation match. Shalita Clark added six kills. Lindsey Young had nine kills and 22 assists.
Montevallo fell to Catholic High School of Montgomery 9-25, 12-25, 22-25 in the quarterfinals of a Class 3A regional tournament at Montgomery Academy.
Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs (15-12) with five kills. Cloe Jones had 10 assists and Mallory Anderson finished with 11 digs.
Shelby County saw its season end with the loss to Briarwood in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A regional tournament.
