Montevallo seals playoff bid Friday despite overtime loss

Montevallo High School fell 34-33 in overtime on the road Friday night at Montgomery Academy, but the news wasn’t all bad for the Bulldogs.

Montevallo qualified for the Class 3A playoffs following a loss by Class 3A, Region 3 partner LaFayette.

Callender put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first Friday with a 1-yard touchdown run. Garrius Chappell added a 13-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter and Brett Grey’s extra point extended the Montevallo lead to 13-0.

Following two Montgomery Academy touchdowns, Toney Kent scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to give Montevallo a 20-13 lead with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter. Callender’s 27-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Scaife pushed the lead to 27-13 early in the fourth quarter before Montgomery Academy rallied to tie the game at 27-27 with 46 seconds remaining.

Callender scored on a 2-yard run in overtime before Grey’s extra-point attempt was blocked. Montgomery Academy scored on its first overtime possession and added the extra point to win the game.

The Bulldogs (4-4, 3-3 Class 3A, Region 3) rushed for 297 yards in the loss. Callender led the way with 172 rushing yards, including 134 yards in the first half.

Brandon Lilly caught two passes for 24 yards. Montevallo closes out Region 3 play on the road Oct. 23 at Trinity Presbyterian.
