A few residents at Alabaster’s Shelby Ridge Nursing Home and Rehab Select have raised more than $700 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Alabama, and are aiming to break the $2,000 by the end of Ocotber.
Throughout the month, Shelby Ridge is sponsoring a handful of fundraisers to benefit the regional Alzheimer’s foundation, including gift basket raffles, a bake sale and a hot dog lunch.
“We started the fundraisers for this month on Oct. 11, which was a day after our Race for the Cure fundraiser ended,” said Patricia Bradberry, a Shelby Ridge resident who worked to organize the fundraisers. “The most recent number right now is $700, but we are hoping all of our other events will help us add a lot to that.”
Each day, Bradberry and other Shelby Ridge residents have been selling raffle tickets and paper Alzheimer’s awareness shoes to residents, staff and visitors to the facility.
At the end of the month, Bradberry will raffle off seven fall-themed gift baskets designed by Alzheimer’s unit nurse Nikki Raia. On Oct. 28, Shelby Ridge will hold a bake sale from 8 a.m. “until the items run out,” and will feature cookies, coffee and many other homemade and bakery purchased items.
The fundraiser will continue Oct. 30 with a hot dog lunch for the Shelby Ridge staff and residents. On Nov. 4, the facility also will host a chili cook-off, which will be followed Nov. 5 by a bingo night.
Beginning Oct. 27, Shelby Ridge will begin selling Alzheimer’s awareness shirts. All money raised during the fundraisers will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association during the Alzheimer’s Walk for a Cure, which will be held Nov. 7 in Riverchase.
