Calera Fire Chief Tommy Moon always did his best to honor those who deserved it.

After Calera firefighter and EMT Chris Roy was killed in November 2005 in an accident on his way to a fire, Moon worked hard to make sure Roy would be remembered, spearheading the drive to rename Calera Fire Station No. 2 the Christopher J. Roy Building. Moon also came up with the idea of creating an outdoor garden at Calera Elementary in Roy’s honor.

Moon’s determination to show his appreciation for others’ sacrifices helped make him one of the most-admired men in Calera.

Now that Moon has passed away far too early, a victim of leukemia, it’s time to honor him for the sacrifices he made and the work he put in as Calera’s fire chief.

Moon was Calera’s first full-time fire chief, and he worked hard to make sure his fire department continually improved on his watch.

When it was discovered he had leukemia, the community rallied behind him, hosting blood drives and motorcycle charity rides in his honor and to raise awareness.

Now, the Moon family and the Calera community needs the rest of us to rally behind them, joining them in grief and prayer. Much like Tommy Moon honored his loved ones, today we honor him.

Moon’s funeral is Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at Calera Baptist Church. The family is asking that donations be made to the Leukemia Society.
