Briarwood caps regular season with win over Anniston

Briarwood Christian School capped its regular season with a 37-20 win on the road Thursday night at Anniston.

Briarwood quarterback Paul Barber completed 11-of-19 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for an additional 87 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Lions.

Sam Whitaker added 77 yards and Matthew Furuto rushed for 72 yards in the win. Cooper Harrington caught four passes for 67 yards and rushed for another 24 yards.

The Lions (7-3) put their first points on the scoreboard following a safety with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Paul Barber scored on a 12-yard run and Wilson Whorton added the extra point with 2:35 left in the first quarter to push the Briarwood lead to 9-0.

Zeke Walters scored on a 1-yard run and Whorton added the extra point to push the Lions’ lead to 16-0 early in the second quarter. Anniston scored two touchdowns late in the second quarter to cut the Briarwood lead to 16-14 at halftime.

Barber scored on a 6-yard run and connected with Paul McKelvey for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Whorton was successful on both extra-point attempts to push the Lions’ lead to 30-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Furuto capped the scoring for Briarwood with a 20-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining in the game.

The Lions will host Chilton County in the first round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A playoffs next Friday.
