The Pelham Civic Complex was full of the Christmas spirit Monday as thousands of residents turned out for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Residents enjoyed musical performances by the Pelham High School jazz ensemble, the Riverchase Middle School band and choirs from PHS, RMS, Valley Elementary and Valley Intermediate.
“This is one time a year Pelham comes together as a community,” Mayor Don Murphy said. “It’s just a good feeling to start the Christmas season.”
Spectators also enjoyed an exhibition game by the Pelham Youth Hockey League and a performance by the Pelham Skate School dancers.
The highlight of the night was the lighting of the Christmas tree, which was lit this year by Riley Ward, daughter of State Rep. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster.
Following the lighting, Santa Claus made an appearance, riding around the ice rink on the complex Zamboni.
After the Zamboni ride, children had their pictures made with Santa, while visitors enjoyed cookies, hot cocoa and hot apple cider.
“It brings tears to my eyes to see how happy these children are,” said Murphy. “This is one time a year we can all be children.”
