Oak Mountain junior wins swimming title

Oak Mountain High School junior Kreable Young captured the girls’ 200-yard freestyle swimming title Dec. 5 at the 2009 Alabama High School Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn.

Young won the championship with a time of 1:54.99. She qualified for the finals with a preliminary time of 1:54.48.

Young was the only Shelby County athlete to win an individual title at the Swimming and Diving Championships.

The top-finishing teams from Shelby County in the competition were the Spain Park High School boys’ and girls’ squads, which each finished ninth in their respective team standings.

Briarwood Christian School’s Mallory Mathias finished second overall in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle swimming event with a time of 1:55.78, which tied her with Hoover’s Claire Williamson.

Mathias also finished second in the girls’ 500-yard freestyle swimming event with a time of 5:03.11. Oak Mountain’s Young finished third in the same event with a time of 5:05.94.

Spain Park’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Emily Lin, Maddie Wohlfarth, Elizabeth Lapham and Madeline Held finished fourth overall with a time of 1:42.27 in the girls standings.

Lin, Wohlfarth, Lapham and Held came in third overall in the girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay event with a time of 3:45.68.

The Jaguars’ boys 200-yard freestyle relay team of Will Freeman, William McKinney, Sean Morris and Corey Holmes came in fifth overall with a time of 1:34.64.

The quartet also finished fourth overall in the boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay event with a time of 3:25.34.

Oak Mountain finished 13th overall in the girls team standings. Briarwood Christian came in 20th overall.
