Fred’s Discount Pharmacy in Montevallo recently donated nearly $400 to the city’s fire and police departments through the store’s Hero Hat fundraiser.

Fred’s stores across the nation have sponsored the fundraiser since 2002 to honor the victims of 9/11. Through the program, the store sold Hero Hats for $1 each and donated all proceeds to Montevallo’s emergency responders. Every year, the store also donates all of its operating profits on Sept. 11 to the Hero Hat program.

Across the nation, Fred’s donated nearly $315,000 to city law enforcement and emergency response agencies.

“This is our way each year of thanking the men and women who put their lives at risk every day to protect our lives and property,” said Ursula Roman, Fred’s marketing director.
