Following the annual success of the Alabama High School Athletic Association volleyball state tournament and the recent Pelham Challenge tennis tournament at the Pelham Civic Complex, two more events have been added to the complex’s sports lineup.
The Alabama Poolplayers Association will bring their annual tournament to the complex June 4-6 and 10-13, while JAM Brands will bring their annual Cheerleading and Dance Competition to the complex in March.
The pool tournament was formerly held at the Zamora Temple in Birmingham, while the cheer and dance competition was previously held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
“What we’re trying to do is make the facility as diverse as possible,” said Eva Shepherd, the city’s marketing director. “The complex is an intangible to bring people into Pelham who have not been here before, and that has a trickle-down effect.”
Mayor Don Murphy said the success of the Pelham Challenge show just how versatile the complex can be.
“We’re trying to come up with creative ideas for the complex,” Murphy said. “We’re trying to bring in new events, which will in turn bring in more events.”
Both Murphy and Shepherd said it is a testament to the quality of the complex to be able to lure events away from facilities like the Zamora Temple and the BJCC.
“We have a convenient location, a great facility and free parking,” said Shepherd. “What more could you ask for?”
